Site and climate
Hamm corresponds to the single vineyard of Moselweißer Hamm on the right bank of the Mosel, between the Koblenz districts of Moselweiß and Lay. The vines are located close to the river, which separates them via the federal road B49. The steep, wind-sheltered westerly site with a south-westerly aspect lies on a pronounced bend of the Mosel near Koblenz.
Soil and farming
In the upper part, the soil consists of pure slate, while the lower area is characterised by softer slate with clay deposits. When the vineyard was newly established around 2000, cross terraces were created, improving exposure to sunlight and access for machinery.
Grape varieties and wines
Riesling is documented in both the upper and lower parts of Moselweißer Hamm. In the lower area, Weißburgunder and Spätburgunder are also grown. For Hamm, dry Riesling as a single-vineyard wine, as well as Spätlese and Pinot Noir wines, are documented.
History
For the vineyards in the Hamm area in Moselweiß, archival evidence exists from the years 1469 and 1470. In the 16th century, the local parish of St Laurentius is demonstrably known to have received wines from Moselweißer Hamm. The official vineyard register lists Hamm in Koblenz within the winegrowing region Mosel.
