Location and Classification
The Hahnenberge carry the official designation Steigraer Hahnenberge. The single vineyard site belongs to the wine-growing region Saale-Unstrut, to the Schloss Neuenburg area and to the Großlage Freyburger Schweigenberg.
Landscape and Soils
To the west of Steigra lie the Hahnenberge on the Querfurter Platte. The terrain is part of a landscape shaped by slopes and high plateaus that falls towards the Unstrut valley, and lies at an altitude of around 220 metres. The soils are associated with weathered Muschelkalk, Bunter sandstone and loess.
Climate and Wine-Growing History
The wine-growing area is dry and warm. In particular, slopes with a southerly and south-westerly exposure support viticulture there. For Steigra, this has already been documented in a charter from the year 1207, in which vineyards of the Reinsdorf monastery are mentioned.
Documented Wines
From the Steigraer Hahnenbergen, dry Riesling Spätlese, dry Portugieser quality wine and dry Cabernet Cortis are documented as Auslese that has been aged in barrique. Silvaner is also produced from grapes from this site together with other named vineyards.
