Location and classification
Hahn corresponds to IM HAHN, the old cadastral designation for the best part of the Bacharach Hahn. The vineyard lies in Bacharach in the Middle Rhine winegrowing region, about one kilometre below the town directly on the Rhine and near the Loreley. The VDP classifies IM HAHN as VDP.GROSSE LAGE®.
Topography and soils
The steep slope, facing south to south-southeast, drops with a gradient of 65 to 70 per cent from around 200 to 80 metres above sea level down to the Rhine. The dark, weathered Devonian slate stores heat and releases it again on summer evenings and during the nights. Reflection of sunlight from the Rhine further enhances the level of sunshine.
Grape varieties and wine style
The classified vineyard covers 1.94 hectares and is farmed by the VDP.Weingut Toni Jost. In the higher areas Riesling predominates; at the foot of the steep slope Spätburgunder grows. The Rieslings are described as powerful, elegant, spicy, full-bodied, with fine acidity and a mineral character; the proximity to the Rhine shapes the expression of the fruit.
History
The name may go back to the former Hane monastery, which the vineyard once belonged to. Roofing slate was extracted below the site until 1936.
