Grange

The Penfolds Magill Estate is located in Magill in South Australia, at 78 Penfold Road. This urban, single-vineyard monopoly is situated within the city limits in the Adelaide Foothills. The remaining vineyard area comprises 5.24 hectares around Grange Cottage and the Cellar Door.

The climate is warm and dry and is softened by sea breezes. The vineyard is planted entirely with Shiraz. The vines are cultivated without irrigation, pruned by hand and picked by hand.

Christopher and Mary Penfold planted the vineyard in 1843; in 1844, the vineyard and the wine business at the Magill Estate were officially established. The originally 120-hectare area was reduced to the current vineyard area by urban development. The name Grange is derived from Grange Cottage, the family’s original residence.

Max Schubert used Shiraz from Magill Estate and Morphett Vale for the first experimental Grange vintage of 1951. From 1957 to 1959, he produced three secret vintages in the cellars of Magill.

Selected portions of the Magill Estate are used in selected vintages for Penfolds Grange. The Grange components ferment at the Magill Estate in open vessels with 3 to 7 tonnes capacity and then in new American oak casks with 300 litres. After classification, the finished cuvée matures for 18 to 20 months in cask before being bottled and stored further.
