Location and topography
The Grafschafter Sonnenberg is a vineyard area classified as a single-vineyard site in Veldenz within the wine-growing region Mosel. The steep slope is situated on a landform shaped by an older course of the Mosel and is oriented to the south-east.
Climate and soil
The morning sun dries Spätburgunder grape bunches more quickly in autumn and thereby reduces conditions that favour botrytis. For a Riesling plot, deep blue slate and quartzite are documented.
Grape varieties and cultivation
In the Grafschafter Sonnenberg, Riesling and Spätburgunder are grown. The Riesling comes from a biologically farmed plot with vines that are about 70 years old and ungrafted.
Wine production
A still white wine made from Riesling is matured in large oak foudres. For wines from the steep-slope plots, selective hand harvesting, bunch selection and gentle processing without mechanical strain are documented.
