Grafensprung

Grafensprung near Gernsbach

The Grafensprung is a rock formation and a viewpoint in Gernsbach. It lies to the west of the Murg between Scheuern and Obertsrot, below Eberstein Castle.

Rock formation and geology

The steep rock face is located on the slope of the Murg valley. Eberstein Castle lies about 130 metres above the Murg. The rock formation is assigned to the Forbach granite.

Origin of the name

The name goes back to a story in which Count Wolf of Eberstein is said to have jumped from the castle across the rocks into the Murg on horseback during a siege. Neu-Eberstein was in fact besieged in 1367; at that time, however, Wolf was staying elsewhere.
