Location and climate
Goldloch is a vineyard site in Dorsheim in the Nahe wine-growing region. It lies on the north side of the Trollbachtal and is protected within the valley. The conditions include a long duration of sunshine and good water supply; the Nahetal is considered mild, sunny and protected from cold winds by the Hunsrück.
Relief and soils
The site, which is oriented from south to south-west, extends from about 140 to 210 metres above sea level. The slope gradient is approximately 15 to 55 percent, and the vineyard areas are partly terraced on a large scale. The VDP profile states an area of around 10 hectares, while the classified area is given as 11.84 hectares.
The soil consists of stony, gravelly slope loam over rock and conglomerates of the Oberrotliegendes. A thin layer of clay contains numerous small stones.
Grape variety and wine styles
Riesling is the documented main grape variety and the classified grape variety of the site. Labelled Goldloch Rieslings are available as dry Grosses Gewächs as well as in the Prädikatswein styles Kabinett, Spätlese, Auslese, Beerenauslese and Trockenbeerenauslese.
A producer description states that for Goldloch Riesling there are aromas of ripe peach and exotic fruits, as well as a juicy, comparatively opulent and at the same time finely structured character.
Name and classification
The name Goldloch appears in the land register in 1819; the site is already documented as Am Loch in 1756. As possible explanations for the addition Gold, a possible gold mining, high-yielding wines or the colour of the slope in the evening light are mentioned. Goldloch is classified by the VDP as VDP.GROSSE LAGE®.
