Location and Classification
Goldgrube is an officially listed single vineyard site in the municipality and cadastral district of Köngernheim in Rheinhessen. It belongs to the Nierstein area and to the Großlage Gutes Domtal. The vineyard plots lie at around 130 to 150 metres above sea level and face south.
Area and Soils
In the 2024 wine-growing register, 74.2 hectares of vineyard area are listed; the Rheinhessen regional portal gives 73 hectares. The documented soil types are marl-Pararendzina and loess-Pararendzina. The marl soil is a deep, calcareous clay soil with calcareous loams and sands from deposits of the Tertiary Sea. The loess-Pararendzina is a deep, fertile, calcareous loam soil made of calcareous dust blown in during the Ice Ages.
Wine Style and Grape Varieties
With marl-Pararendzina, full-bodied, powerful wines are linked with balanced acidity. For white wines, tropical fruit, melon and apricot are described; for red wines, dark fruit and smoky spice. Loess-Pararendzina stands for fruit-forward, refreshing wines with moderate structure, as well as notes of apple, peach, pear and citrus.
In Goldgrube, Riesling, Silvaner, Burgundy varieties, Dornfelder, Spätburgunder and St. Laurent are grown, among others. Ökoweingut Dietz also lists Müller-Thurgau, Sauvignon, Scheurebe, Bacchus, Muscaris, Kerner and Huxel in its Goldgrube holdings or wines.
Cultivation and Maturation
Ökoweingut Dietz cultivates 23 hectares in Köngernheimer Goldgrube with about 110,440 vines and has given priority to biological cultivation in recent years. Weingut Hammen describes the grapes as carefully cultivated and matures its wines on its own estate, where they ripen on fine lees until bottling. According to the regional portal, the name Goldgrube generally expresses the value placed on the land and does not refer to occurrences of precious metals.
