Goldenes Horn

The Golden Horn is a legally recognised single vineyard site in the municipality and wine-growing district of Siefersheim. It lies within the Großlage Rheingrafenstein in the Bingen area of the wine-growing region Rheinhessen and comprises 75 hectares. The site consists of sloping and flat parcels and forms a landform that tapers to a point, projecting into the surrounding landscape.

The Golden Horn extends from 160 to 240 metres above sea level and is predominantly oriented to the north-east. Depending on the parcel, wind and sunshine exposure differ. Documented are loess-influenced pararendzinas as well as volcanic rigosols. The pararendzinas are deep, calcareous, clayey-silty loams with high water storage that is available to plants and good root penetration. The rigosols consist of shallow to medium-depth, stony sandy loams with an acidic soil reaction, good warming properties and moderate root penetration. The volcanic material is described as pale igneous rock from the Rotliegend formation.

The different land forms, soils, wind exposure positions and orientations enable the cultivation of several grape varieties. In the regional site profile, Riesling, Silvaner, Spätburgunder and Portugieser are documented. In addition, St. Laurent, Dornfelder, Müller-Thurgau, Gelber Muskateller, Sauvignon Blanc and Weißburgunder are grown at the Golden Horn.

On the loess and pararendzina soils, yellow-fruit characters reminiscent of apple, peach, pear and citrus are combined with moderate structure, mild acidity and comparatively early drinking ripeness. The volcanic rigosols are described with mineral, stony, smoky and flinty notes, as well as apple, peach and citrus character, lively freshness, pronounced acidity and a requirement for ripeness.

The name refers to the horn-like, pointed shape of the site; “gold” is explained as an expression of appreciation in wine site names. The panoramic view was selected in 2016 as “Most Beautiful Wine View” in Rheinhessen.
