Location and classification
The Goldberg is a single-vineyard site in the Wonnegau area and within the Großlage Liebfrauenmorgen of the winegrowing region Rheinhessen. It lies in the cadastre district of Horchheim in the city of Worms.
Topography and soils
The vineyard site is at around 105 to 125 metres above sea level and faces south-east to south. The soils consist of gravel, sand and loam, or Rigosol, and are described as ice-age river deposits. They are moderately deep, stony and sandy-loamy; they drain and aerate well and store only a limited amount of plant-available water. The nutrient content is low; the soil reaction is neutral to acidic. Heat absorption and root penetration conditions are good to moderately good. In dry years, this creates a risk of drought stress.
Area and wine style
The regional site profile lists an area of 69 hectares for the Goldberg. In the official vineyard register 2024, 71.5 hectares of vines are recorded under the site number 730505. The wines are described as Burgundian in orientation and predominantly red-wine focused. They show herb-spiced aromas, a firm structure, a balanced relationship between freshness and fullness, juicy texture, density, distinct palate pressure and ageing potential.
Grape varieties and history
Dornfelder, Regent, Portugieser, Spätburgunder, Frühburgunder, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Saint Laurent are documented for wines from the Horchheimer Goldberg. The name of the site is already attested in the form “uff dem goltberg” for the years 1464 and 1560.
