Location and Landscape
The Goldberg lies above Wawern in a side valley of the Saar in the cultivation area Mosel-Saar-Ruwer. The south-westerly oriented site extends to about 235 metres above sea level and shows slopes of up to 38 per cent. In the upper part it borders on woodland, in the lower part on the Herrenberg vineyard.
Soil and Classification
The Goldberg is characterised by slate; grey slate and a high proportion of stones are described. A further description mentions red slate with proportions of volcanic rhyolite and/or quartz porphyry. The name Goldberg is traced back to the mica-containing component of the rock. The site receives very high exposure to sunlight and is classified as a VDP.GROSSE LAGE® with 12.56 hectares of designated area. The classified grape variety is Riesling.
Wines and Winemaking
Dry Rieslings are documented from the Goldberg, including the Goldberg Riesling GG by Van Volxem; historical Rieslings were also referred to as Auslese. For the 2018 vintage, nature-oriented viticulture, reduced yields and a late selective hand harvest are described. In the cellar, spontaneous fermentation followed, along with extended maturation and ageing in wooden barrels for over 10 to 11 months without fining agents.

The Goldberg is listed on the historical map of Mosel winegrowing for the administrative district of Trier from the year 1906.
