Location and context
The Goldberg is a single vineyard site within the cadastral district of Udenheim. It belongs to the Großlage of Domherr in the Nierstein area and lies in the protected wine-growing region of Rheinhessen. In the 2024 vineyard register, the area is recorded as 126.6 hectares.
Soils and wine style
Documented are loess-pararendzina and marl-pararendzina. The calcareous loess forms deep, fertile and well-rootable clay soils with good water-storage capacity available to plants. This gives rise to fresh, finely-fruited wines with moderate structure and a gentle acidity.
The marl-pararendzina consists of calcareous loams and sands from tertiary marine deposits. It forms deep, strongly calcareous clay soils with a high proportion of swelling clay. The wines produced from this are described as dense, full-bodied and highly expressive, with balanced acidity as well as lasting fruit, texture and fullness.
History and grape varieties
The wine site is already documented towards the end of the 15th century under the name zu goltreyne. The designation Goldberg is generally understood as an expression of appreciation and not as an indication of a precious metal.
For the Udenheim Goldberg, Silvaner and Bacchus are recorded. A Silvaner was produced as a Trockenbeerenauslese and a sweet wine. A Bacchus from the 2023 vintage is classified as Kabinett and is described as pleasant to drink.
