Location and delimitation
Goldberg is a single vineyard recognised under Baden-Württemberg wine law, spanning multiple municipalities. It includes the place names Bretzfeld, Pfedelbach, Verrenberg and Windischenbach. The legal delimitation includes the vineyard with Öhringen as well as areas in Pfedelbach and Bretzfeld.
Topography and soils
The Verrenberger Goldberg is oriented from west to south-west, lies at 240 to 270 metres above sea level and has a slope gradient of 25 to 40 percent. The geology is characterised by Keuper; the plots in Verrenberg are on very poor Keuper soil.
Variety and classification
In the VDP classification, Riesling is designated as the grape variety of the Verrenberger Goldberg. The site is classified as VDP.ERSTE LAGE® and comprises a classified area of 106 hectares. The plots, oriented to the south-west, receive a high amount of sunshine and are described as being particularly suitable for Riesling.
Historical references
For the year 1402, it is documented that the lords of Hohenlohe acquired the wine press and the tithe on the Goldberg from the lords of Weinsberg. A historical description also reports extensive viticulture on the Galberg, also called Goldberg, and on the Verrenberg. For this period, Trollinger, Silvaner, Elbling, Gutedel and Veltliner are mentioned.
