Location and classification
Goldberg is a single vineyard site in Grünstadt-Asselheim in the Pfalz, a German quality wine region. The wine sites register of the state of Rhineland-Palatinate assigns the site of Asselheim and the Großlage Höllenpfad to the area. Asselheim belongs to the town of Grünstadt.
Site and soils
The site lies at around 250 to 270 metres above sea level. It is described as sunny and is at the same time shaped by its altitude and the cooling influence of the Eistal valley. The soils are considered to be calcareous and low in nutrients; mentioned are calcareous loam and mineral-rich calcareous marl soils.
Grape varieties and cultivation
For Goldberg, Riesling and Pinot varieties such as Weissburgunder, Grauburgunder, Chardonnay and Spätburgunder are documented. The proven wine styles include dry Riesling and dry Grauburgunder. For the Goldberg parcels of the Schroth winery, hand-harvesting, a yield reduction to around 2,500 to 3,000 litres per hectare, and for some parcels several picking rounds are given. The white wines from this operation mature half in stainless steel and in new barriques.
