Location and classification
Goldberg is a legally defined single vineyard site in the cadastre district and in the municipality of Flomborn. It lies in the Wonnegau area and within the Großlage Bergkloster in Rheinhessen, to the south-east of Flomborn. The vineyards extend from 190 to 250 metres in altitude and are officially exposed to the east-north-east.
Soils and vines
The 46-hectare site is shaped by loess and pararendzina. The deep, light loam with clayey silty loam has a high water-storage capacity available to plants, good aeration, a limestone content and good root penetration. From Goldberg plots, Portugieser is documented, including old, ungrafted vines.
Wine style and vinification
The official site profile links the location with yellow-fruit aromas such as apple, peach, pear and citrus, as well as fresh, moderately structured and early-drinking wines. From the old, ungrafted Portugieser vines, wines are also described as full-bodied and dense. For red site wines, selective harvesting, classic tank-fermentation with indigenous must in open vats and ageing in wooden casks or barriques are documented; for white site wines, selective hand-harvesting, gentle processing and longer ageing on fine lees are documented.
