Location and Context
Goldberg is a legally defined single vineyard within the municipal area of Eich. It belongs to the Großlage Krötenbrunnen and to the Nierstein area in Rheinhessen. The official wine-growing site directory of 2024 lists the vineyard under wine-growing site number 720507.
Area and Soil
In the cadastral district of Eich, 1.1 hectares of planted vineyard area are recorded. The deep, calcareous sandy soil is classified as Sand-Rigosol and formed from calcareous dust and sand deposited during the Ice Ages. It has a medium water-holding capacity, very good aeration and rooting depth, as well as a medium to good potential for warming.
Wine Style
The site is associated with intensely fruity, deep and densely structured wines with mild acidity. The expression of red wine is described as stronger than that of white wine. In their youth, the wines come across as open; with ageing, balance and complexity develop. The warmth of the site is also linked to thick berry skins.
Historical and Variety-Related Notes
Goldberg was documented in 1523 under the name am goldtberg. The name is explained as an expression of appreciation and is not traced back to the presence of gold. A dry Saint Laurent from the 2015 vintage from H. L. Menger winery is documented as a wine from the Eicher Goldberg.
