Location and classification
Glockenberg is a single vineyard site in the municipal and cadastral area of Gau-Bischofsheim in the wine-growing region Rheinhessen. The site belongs to the Nierstein area and to the Großlage of Sankt Alban.
Topography and soils
The vineyard site comprises 17 hectares and lies at around 150 to 205 metres above sea level. Its exposure runs from east towards south. The soil consists of loess over pararendzina, a calcareous wind-deposited sediment laid down during the ice ages.
Documented features include deep, light loam with clayey silty material, a high plant-available water storage capacity, good aeration, calcareousness and good root penetration.
Grape varieties and history
The site is suitable for grape varieties that ripen late. With Glockenberg, Riesling, Silvaner, Weißburgunder, Grauburgunder and Spätburgunder are associated.
Glockenberg was documented for the first time in 1401 under the name an dem glockinberge. A transmitted regional explanation attributes the name to the fact that the yield was assigned to the bell-ringer in earlier times.
