Location and classification
Geyersberg is a single-vineyard site in the municipality of Sankt Johann in the Bingen sub-region of the wine-growing region Rheinhessen. The vineyard area covers 100 hectares. Geyersberg is classified as a single-vineyard site of the Großlage Abtey.
Topography
The site is located at around 170 to 260 metres above sea level. Its exposure ranges from south-east via south to west.
Soils and wine style
Documented soils include marl-pelosol and loess-pararendzina. Marl-pelosol is deep, calcareous, nutrient-rich and contains a high proportion of swellable clay minerals. This soil type is associated with full-bodied, dense wines with moderate acidity, a creamy texture and ripe aromas of mango, apricot and honeydew melon. Loess-pararendzina is also deep and calcareous, fertile and has a high capacity for water storage available to plants. It is associated with comparatively lean, refreshing wines with gentle acidity, medium to pronounced structure, as well as aromas of apple, peach, pear and citrus fruits.
Origin of the name
The name Geyersberg is explained by the historical use of the word “Geier” for birds of prey and is traced back to their occurrence at this location.
