Location and classification
Geyersberg is an officially recognised single vineyard site in the municipality of Gau-Weinheim in Rheinhessen. It belongs to the Großlage Kurfürstenstück and lies in the district of Bingen. To the east of Gau-Weinheim, it extends across the south-eastern outlying slopes of the Wißberg.
Terrain and soils
The gentle slopes face south-west to south and are situated at around 140 to 200 metres above sea level. The site is protected from cold north winds. Its soils are described as dark loess and heavy clay; the predominant soil type is marl, or Pelosol, with deep, calcareous clay, and limited drainage and aeration.
Grape varieties and wine style
The documented main grape varieties include Riesling, Silvaner and Müller-Thurgau. In addition, Scheurebe and Bacchus are grown, as well as red grape varieties. The marl and Pelosol soils are associated with full-bodied, dense and substantial wines that show moderate acidity, a creamy texture and ripe fruit notes such as mango, apricot, honeydew melon and mirabelle plum.
Area and history of the name
The total area of the site is approximately 63 hectares; in the vineyard register of Rhineland-Palatinate, Geyersberg in Gau-Weinheim is listed with 68.9 hectares of planted vineyard area. The entry lists the site under number 710404. The name refers to birds of prey that were previously associated with the area; the Gau-Weinheim chronicle also mentions species such as vultures and griffon vultures.
