Location and Classification
Gerümpel is a legally registered single vineyard south of Wachenheim on the Weinstraße in the Pfalz. The site belongs to the Mittelhaardt/Deutsche Weinstraße area and to the Großlage Mariengarten. It borders the municipal area of Forst, but lies entirely within the Wachenheim cadastral district. In the VDP classification, Wachenheimer Gerümpel is classified as VDP.ERSTE LAGE®.
Topography and Soils
The site, oriented to the east and west, lies at around 125 to 170 metres above sea level. The slope gradient is 0.7 to 7 per cent; the terrain is predominantly flat and rises towards the edge of the forest. The soil components are described as loamier sand, limestone rubble and basalt, as well as robust loamier sand and calcareous loess.
Grape Varieties and Wine Style
In the VDP classification, Riesling and Spätburgunder are listed as classified grape varieties. For the parcel belonging to Georg Mosbacher, Riesling is documented. The Rieslings described from this show pronounced fragrance, aromas of peach and ripe yellow fruit, a full-bodied texture, balance and fine minerality.
Area and Cultivation
The classified area comprises 13.62 hectares. In the vineyard, among others, Georg Mosbacher, Dr. Bürklin-Wolf and Karl Schaefer work. For a documented 2020 vintage by Georg Mosbacher, selective hand harvesting, temperature-controlled fermentation at 17 °C in stainless steel, and maturation on the fine lees until the end of April 2021 are stated. The name is linked to a transfer of parcels from Philipp von Bechtolsheim to his relative Grympel von Bechtolsheim in 1499; alternatively, an origin from crumbling clayey soil is documented.
