Location and classification
The Geißberg is a registered single-vineyard site in the Heidesheim am Rhein cadastral area within Ingelheim am Rhein. It belongs to the Bingen area and to the Großlage Kaiserpfalz in the winegrowing region Rheinhessen. In the vineyard sites register it is listed under number 710309. The planted area is 12.4 hectares.
Topography and soil
The vineyards are located at around 120 to 180 metres above sea level. The orientation runs east-northeast and turns to the north. The documented soil type is sand/rigosol: a deep, calcareous sandy soil formed from calcareous dust and sand deposited during the Ice Age. It has moderate usable water storage, very good aeration and root penetration, a moderate to good ability to warm up, and mostly adequate nutrient supply.
Wine profile
The soil-based profile puts more emphasis on red wine. It describes thick berry skins favoured by warmth, pronounced fruit, depth, mild acidity and a dense structure. The wines open early and can benefit from ripening in the bottle.
History and landscape
The name is documented for the year 1587 in the form ahm geißbergk. The area was originally used as pasture for goats; historical sources report disputes over grazing rights. There are also remains of a water pipeline towards Ingelheim, which were once attributed to the Romans, but are now dated to the early Middle Ages. The landscape is interspersed with vineyards with small hedges and orchards, and lies in the cadastral area of Heidesheim am Rhein.
