Location and classification
Gartenlay is a registered single vineyard in Leutesdorf and belongs to the Burg Hammerstein group of sites in the wine-growing region Mittelrhein. The vineyard site lies within the Leutesdorf cadastral area on the Rhine at kilometre 614.
Landscape and soils
The vineyards are located on the steep slopes above Leutesdorf on the sunny right bank of the Rhine. The soils are strongly shaped by weathered slate; for Leutesdorf’s Gartenlay, slate and greywacke have also been documented.
Area and grape varieties
The registered planted area totalled 42.7 hectares in 2024. For the site, Kerner and Riesling are documented, including Riesling from the upper part of Gartenlay.
History and wine style
In 2006, the former single vineyards Forstberg, Gartenlay and Rosenberg were combined under the designation Gartenlay. Documented Gartenlay Rieslings are available in styles that are dry and off-dry.
