Location and classification
The winery chamber is an official single vineyard site in Walporzheim, a district of the town of Bad Neuenahr-Ahrweiler in the wine-growing region Ahr. In the official register of vineyard sites, it is assigned to the Großlage Klosterberg and to the cadastral area of Ahrweiler. The VDP classifies it as VDP.GROSSE LAGE.
Topography and soil
The south-facing winery chamber lies as a terraced hillside site at around 110 to 180 metres above sea level. The slope gradient is 15 to 60 per cent. The soil consists of dark grey slate rock and weathered slate with sandy loam.
Climate and history
A high slate wall protects the site within the slope. The dark rock stores the summer heat into the evening and provides a particularly warm local climate. The name Gärkammer refers to the high temperatures that occur there especially in summer. In 1849, Johann Gottfried Kinkel described the site as the finest wine-growing site in the Ahr valley.
Vines and wine
Covering around 0.68 hectares, the site is a monopole vineyard of the estate J.J. Adeneuer and is planted exclusively with Spätburgunder; part of the vines are own-rooted. From the Walporzheim Gärkammer, the estate produces a site-specific red Pinot Noir as a VDP.GROSSES GEWÄCHS.
