Location and landscape
Fürstenlager is the Auerbacher Fürstenlager wine-growing site in Bensheim-Auerbach, in the wine-growing region Hessische Bergstraße. It lies on the steep vineyard slopes around the Fürstenlager valley basin and is described as a small, steep site. The soil consists of sandy loam with granite weathering and individual loess gullies.
Grape variety and wine style
The site is traditionally associated with the cultivation of Riesling. The wines are described as light and fresh, with fruit-driven acidity; the Rieslings from this site are also considered firm and fruit-forward.
Historical reference
The wine-growing site is named after the nearby Fürstenlager, the summer residence of the Hessian ruling house. When designing the landscaped park as an ornamental estate, the court gardener Carl Ludwig Geiger also planted a vineyard among the agricultural plots.
