Location and Classification
Fuchsloch is a registered single vineyard site in the municipality and cadastral district of Gau-Odernheim. It belongs to the Großlage Petersberg and to the Nierstein area in Rheinhessen. In the German wine-growing sites directory, it is listed under number 720615. The vineyard area covers 73.1 hectares.
Topography and Soils
The site lies at an altitude of about 160 to 186 metres above sea level and has exposures from east to south-west. As a soil formation, marl pararendzina is documented. It consists of calcareous loams and sands, which are associated with deposits from the Tertiary sea. The deep, calcareous clay soil contains a high proportion of clay capable of swelling; it has limited permeability and aeration, as well as a high nutrient content and strong calcareousness.
In addition, loess pararendzina occurs, which was formed from calcareous dust deposited during the Ice Ages. The deep, fertile, light loam with clayey silt stores plant-available water well, is adequately aerated, and can be rooted through effectively.
Wine Style and History
Marl pararendzina is associated with full-bodied wines and balanced acidity. For white wines, mango, honeydew and apricot are described; for red wines, dark fruit and smoky spiciness. Loess pararendzina stands for fruit-forward, refreshing wines with moderate structure and aromas of apple, peach, pear, and citrus fruits.
Fuchsloch was documented in 1466 under the name daz fuszloch. The current name is attributed to the presence of numerous fox earths.
