Location and classification
Fröhlich, also known as Bechenheimer Fröhlich, is a 33-hectare vineyard site in the municipality and cadastral district of Bechenheim in the Wonnegau, a wine-growing subregion of Rheinhessen. It is designated as an official single vineyard within the larger Sybillenstein site.
Topography and soils
The site lies at around 270 to 310 metres above sea level and faces east to south-east. The soil is described as Rotliegend/Rigosol and consists of calcareous loam and fine sand deposits from the upper Rotliegend. It is shallow to medium-depth, stony and calcareous, stores little plant-available water, holds heat well and allows for moderate root penetration.
Wine profile
The regional single-vineyard profile mentions herbal, finely spiced and almost floral notes as well as mineral components. Added to this are fruit aromas of peach, apricot and honeydew melon. The wines show lively acidity, a multi-layered character, are often closed off when young, and have development potential.
History of the name
The name of the site is explained as a deformation of the Middle High German word for a service performed in favour of a feudal lord. A manorial farmstead (Fronhof) was located at this place.
