Freudental

Location and Orientation

Freudental is documented as a single vineyard in Ortenberg in Baden and assigned to the vineyards around Ortenberg Castle. The vineyards are predominantly oriented to the south.

Climate and Geology

The surrounding area is characterised by sunny days and cool nights, which are attributed to the surrounding valley incisions. The sites are strongly influenced by gneiss and granite; in addition, sandstone and porphyry are exposed in tectonic fault zones in the Black Forest slopes.

Grape Varieties and Wine Styles

For Freudental, Grauburgunder, Spätburgunder and Riesling are documented. A Freudental Grauburgunder was made dry with a fine acidity structure. A Spätburgunder from the 2016 vintage matured in wooden barrels, while the site is described as suitable for fresh, lively Rieslings.

History and Land Consolidation

The Gertrud-von-Ortenberg Civic Foundation and the Weinmanufaktur Gengenbach-Offenburg marketed the Freudental wines until 2016 as site wines; the foundation wines have been offered since 2014. The Freudental II land consolidation project was completed in October 2018. In 2008 and 2009, large quantities of rock and soil had been moved in order to rearrange agricultural plots.
