Location and classification
Frankenstein is a designated single vineyard site in the Freimersheim cadastral area. It is located in the Wonnegau region and within the Großlage Sybillenstein in Rheinhessen.
Area and topography
For the 2024 harvest, 12.8 hectares of planted vineyard area are recorded. The site lies at about 180 to 270 metres above sea level. To the north of Freimersheim, the exposure turns from south to east; to the south of the municipality, it is oriented to the east.
Soil
The site is described as limestone, or rendzina, over tertiary marine deposits in connection with a limestone algae reef. The shallow to medium-deep, very calcareous and highly stony sandy loam has low available water storage capacity, good aeration and good warming properties, as well as limited rooting depth.
Wine profile and history
The documented profile describes wines with a pronounced aromatic character, balanced acidity, and mineral and chalky impressions. The fruit characteristics range, with increasing ripeness, from citrus, apple and gooseberry to mango and passion fruit. The site name is documented in 1426 as uff der franckstraße. In the Rhineland-Palatinate wine sites register, Frankenstein is listed under number 730708.
