Location and classification
Forstberg is an officially registered single vineyard in the wine-growing region of Ahr, the Walporzheim/Ahrtal area and the Großlage Klosterberg. The site is located in the municipality of Bad Neuenahr-Ahrweiler, in the cadastral district of Ahrweiler, and bears the vineyard site number 110102.
Topography and soils
Forstberg stretches above Ahrweiler towards Elligtal. To the south, the site borders the vineyard Daubhaus; in the upper section, it merges into orchard and arable land. The site, which is predominantly south to south-westerly facing and fully steep, lies at around 110 to 180 metres above sea level. In the upper section, there are flatter slope areas.
The soils consist mainly of strongly loamy weathering products of greywacke and slate. In places, loess and loess loam are also present.
Area and grape varieties
In the 2024 vineyard register of Rhineland-Palatinate, a total of 11.1 hectares of vine area were recorded for Forstberg. For the designated site as a whole, around 34 hectares are also given. The documented grape varieties include mainly Pinot Noir and Blauer Portugieser, as well as Frühburgunder, Dornfelder, Cabernet Sauvignon and Mitos.
Wine and cultivation
Parcels on soils of greywacke and slate are associated with elegant, fine-fruited wines, while sections of loess and loess loam are associated with fuller-bodied wines. The Ahrweiler Winzer-Verein produces a Pinot Noir designated as Forstberg from organic cultivation and in the category of wines aged in oak barrels. The name of the site goes back to the cadastral name Forstberg.
