Location
The Feuerberg is the Burkheim Feuerberg vineyard site in Burkheim, a district of Vogtsburg im Kaiserstuhl, in the western Kaiserstuhl, and in the growing area Baden.
Climate and Topography
The site is considered to be warm. Upper plots facing south are protected from cold northerly winds, while the dark soil stores the day’s warmth and releases it again at night. The terraced vineyard faces from south-east to south-west, lies at an altitude of 180 to 260 metres and has a slope gradient of 0 to 30 per cent.
Soils and Geology
The Feuerberg consists of volcanic weathering material with a loess cover. The soil profile is shaped by volcanic rock and loess, as well as strongly sandy, slightly stony and moderately calcareous loam. The volcanic structure at the Burkheim Feuerberg was formed by magma intrusions around 16 to 18 million years ago and subsequent erosion.
Grape Varieties and Wines
The area classified by the VDP covers 65 hectares; the VDP Bercher is the cultivator. Permitted grape varieties are Weißburgunder, Grauburgunder, Chardonnay, Muskat and Spätburgunder. Bercher produces a Grauburgunder as VDP.ERSTE LAGE® from the site and describes it as a site wine from volcanic weathering soils.
