Location and Classification
The Feuerberg is a single vineyard site in the cadastral area of Flomborn in the Wonnegau, a sub-region of Rheinhessen. It belongs to the Großlage Bergkloster and lies to the north of Flomborn.
Aspect and Elevation
The site, which is oriented to the south-southwest, benefits from high levels of sunshine. It extends up to around 250 metres above sea level, which contributes to cooler nights.
Soils
At the Feuerberg, calcareous Rendzina and loess-Pararendzina occur. The Rendzina is shallow to medium-depth, very calcareous, stony and sandy-loamy. It stores little water available to plants, is well aerated and warms up well. The deep, fertile loess-Pararendzina consists of calcareous loam with clayey silty loam, stores a lot of water available to plants and is well suited to rooting.
Grape Varieties and Wine Style
The site is planted with Riesling, varieties of the Pinot family and Silvaner. Wines from the calcareous Rendzina are described as expressive and aromatic, with notes of citrus, apple and gooseberry, as well as later hints of tropical fruit. A balanced acidity and mineral or chalky characteristics shape the profile. On loess-Pararendzina, wines are produced with aromas of yellow fruits, apple, peach, pear and citrus, with a fresh, medium-structured and comparatively early-drinking style.
