Location and geography
Festungsblick is a vineyard site in Würzburg in Franconia, on the Greinberg. It lies on the south-west slope of the hill and is oriented to the south as far as south-east. Altitude is 210 to 250 metres above sea level, and the slope gradient is 25 to 35 per cent.
Soil and vineyard area
The documented soil consists of Upper Muschelkalk. Geological investigations also identified a formation comparable to the Würzburger Stein location. The classified vineyard area covers 4.52 hectares. Silvaner is documented as the classified grape variety.
Planting and cultivation
The first section, with 2.3 hectares, was planted by hand with 9,500 Silvaner vines from April 2013. Field groves and hedges were established to protect the vineyard from wind.
History and classification
Juliusspital announced plans for a new vineyard on the Greinberg in the summer of 2012; the original project area covered 5.7 hectares. The first young wine from the site was produced in 2016. Festungsblick was entered in 2015 as the vineyard name for Würzburg in the official vineyard register for Lower Franconia. The VDP classifies Würzburger Festungsblick as VDP.ERSTE LAGE® in the Franconia growing region.
