Location and Classification
The Euchariusberg is an officially registered single vineyard in the Saar wine-growing area of the Mosel wine region and belongs to the Großlage Scharzberg. The site lies within the municipality of Konz and is recorded in the cadastral areas Konz, Krettnach and Niedermennig. The name Euchariusberg accounts for 9.2 hectares in Konz, 36.9 hectares in Krettnach and 4.1 hectares in Niedermennig.
Topography, Climate and Soil
Documented plots include steep vineyard slopes in the Konzer Tal with a south-easterly to south-south-westerly aspect. For the site, a cool Saar climate, long growing seasons, clear differences between daytime and night-time temperatures, and the balancing influence of the nearby Saar are described. The plots are characterised by strongly weathered Devon slate, described as grey or grey-blue slate and in parts with a high proportion of stones.
Grape Varieties and Wine Styles
For the Euchariusberg, Riesling is documented. The site serves as an origin for Riesling Kabinett, Spätlese, Auslese as well as dry and finely off-dry wines. Pinot varieties are documented among the wines from the Landhaus-Euchariusberg’s own vineyards, but they are not assigned to any specific plot.
Historical and Craft Aspects
A cultural-historical entry mentions the vineyard site of Euchariusberg in Krettnach in connection with the Saar-Mosel wine map by Clotten from the year 1868. For documented plots, planting years of 1964, 1973 and 1974 and an age of approximately 75 years are given; in parts, own-rooted old vines are also recorded. For a Krettnach plot, hand-harvesting is documented. The wines were produced, among other methods, using whole-cluster pressing, spontaneous fermentation and maturation on full lees, including a wine in an old Mosel Fuder barrel.
