Location and Classification
Eiserne Hand is a registered single vineyard in the cadastral area of Guntersblum in Rheinhessen. It belongs to the Nierstein area and to the Großlage Krötenbrunnen. The 2024 vineyard register lists 43.3 hectares for this vineyard site.
Soils
Löss over pararendzina as well as löss over chernozem have been documented. The calcareous, deep, loamy pararendzina soils store water and provide good conditions for root penetration and nutrient availability. The löss-chernozems are rich in humus and can be rooted through deeply.
Name and History
The name goes back to a signpost with an iron hand; such signposts were common in the cadastral area of Guntersblum. During land consolidation (Flurbereinigung), in 1987 a Roman road and two stone cellars, presumably belonging to farmsteads located too close by, were discovered in the Flurbereich Eiserne Hand.
Documented Wines
From this vineyard site, a 1994 Gewürztraminer as a Beerenauslese from the Rappenhof, as well as a Spätlese from the Burghof Oswald, have been documented. The soil descriptions assign to löss over pararendzina wines that are fruit-forward and refreshing, with a moderate body, and to löss over chernozem fruit-forward, fuller wines with a medium body.
