Location and Aspect
Edelmann is the official vineyard designation Mittelheimer Edelmann in the district of Mittelheim of Oestrich-Winkel in the growing region Rheingau. The gently sloping site is predominantly oriented to the south; the aspect ranges from south-east via south to south-south-west. The average slope gradient is 5 percent, and the elevation lies between 120 and 180 metres.
Soils and Grape Varieties
The prevailing soils consist of deep, calcareous and stony loess loam with interspersed gravel. In shallow areas, quartzite, gravel, clay and marl also occur. The classified grape varieties listed are Riesling and Spätburgunder. The classified area covers 109 hectares.
Wine Character
Wines from the Edelmann are described as being full-bodied, rich and characterised by pronounced acidity. With increasing ripeness, a greater elegance may develop.
Name and Classification
The name refers to former ownership by the nobility and is documented in 1784 as “im Edelman”. Mittelheimer Edelmann belongs to the Rheingau’s geographical vineyard designations. The VDP lists the site as VDP.ERSTE LAGE®; this private VDP classification is to be distinguished from the statutory German vineyard designation.
