Location
Eckberg is a wine-growing area on the eponymous ridge in Lichtental, a district of Baden-Baden in Baden. The vineyards lie on the south-facing slope of the ridge, which is just under 300 metres high, near the Marienkapelle.
History
In 1245, Eckberg belonged to the lands that were handed over to the Lichtenthal monastery for economic support. The area is documented as part of the former monastic viticultural landscape.
Viticulture
Eckberg and the neighbouring Schafberg are historic wine-growing areas with reference to the Lichtenthal monastery and are connected to one another by a wine hiking trail. The Knapp winery cultivates the vineyard plots there.
Grape varieties and maturation
For Eckberg, Gewürztraminer, Grüner Veltliner, Weißburgunder, Merlot and Spätburgunder are documented. The wines include white wines from the white grape varieties as well as red wines from Merlot and Spätburgunder. Merlot vines were planted in 2013 near the Eckberg chapel; the documented Eckberg Merlot matures in barrique.
