Location and classification
Dornpfad is a single vineyard within the cadastral area of Gabsheim in Rheinhessen. The official classification of wine-growing sites assigns it to the Nierstein area and the Großlage Domherr; the single-vineyard name is Dornpfad.
Landscape and soils
The site lies in the gently undulating hilly landscape of Rheinhessen and in a valley. Gabsheim is described as a climatically favoured, wind-sheltered valley location, framed by the Dornpfad, Kirchberg and Rosengarten vineyard sites.
The soil consists of loess over pararendzina. The calcareous, nutrient-rich soil is a deep, light loam with clayey silt, good root penetration and the ability to store plant-available water.
Name and grape varieties
The name Dornpfad refers to the historical presence of hawthorn hedges in the wine-growing region. Riesling is documented as the predominant grape variety; in addition, Spätburgunder is evidenced in a wine with the designation Gabsheimer Dornpfad.
Wine style and cultivation
The site description combines the loess-pararendzina terroir with yellow-fruit aromas as well as notes of apple, peach, pear and citrus. It is described as having moderate acidity, a medium-bodied character and wines that are ready to drink early.
