Location and Climate
The Domprobst vineyard lies above Graach in the Mosel region and forms an enclave within the Graacher Himmelreich. It is considered a central part of the Graach vineyard sites. The site, which is oriented from south-west to south-south-west, is at around 110 to 260 metres above sea level and has a slope gradient of roughly 45 to 75 per cent. It is protected from wind and frost; in summer, the conditions are described as hot.
Soil and Vines
The soils consist of grey and blue slate with loam. Weathered Devonian slate, a loamy topsoil and water veins are documented for the site. The loam contributes to the site’s ability to store water. Domprobst also has own-rooted vines that can be up to 100 years old. As a classified grape variety, Riesling is listed.
Wine Character
The wines from Domprobst are associated with a powerful, spicy and earthy character, as well as pronounced minerality. A longer maturation period is described as beneficial for the development of elegance and mineral fineness.
Name and Classification
The name of the site refers to the Trier cathedral provost, who historically received one third of the Graach wine tithe. In a document from 1731, the value of the site was given as 200 florins. The VDP classifies Domprobst as VDP.GROSSE LAGE® and lists a classified area of 18.66 hectares.
