Location and Topography
Domherr is a single vineyard site in Piesport on the Mosel. It borders directly on the town and lies within or between parcels of the Goldtröpfchen site. The south-south-easterly facing site is located at elevations of 110 to 160 metres, or 123 to 157 metres. The slope gradient ranges from 30 to 70 percent.
Soil and Grape Variety
The soils consist of deep Devonian slate with admixtures of loam, as well as rocky, stony, weathered loam-slate soils. In the VDP sites register, 4.33 hectares are classified for Domherr; a further description gives around 4 hectares. As a classified grape variety, Riesling is listed. Domherr, Piesport, is classified as VDP.GROSSE LAGE®.
Wine Style
The Rieslings associated with Domherr are described as balanced in sweetness and acidity, with ripe peach, pineapple and pear, juiciness, fine slate notes and pronounced minerality.
Historical Reference
The names Domherr and Dompichter recall the former ownership of the Trier cathedral chapter, the Domhof. The cathedral chapter received the patronage rights in Piesport in 1219. By 1721, the Domhof had grown to considerable size; in 1805, its buildings, the press house and the vineyards were auctioned off as part of the secularisation. In the middle of the vineyard lies a restored Roman large press, which is used each year in October for a ceremonial pressing.
