Location and orientation
Domdechaney is a vineyard site in Hochheim am Main in the wine-growing region Rheingau. It lies at the foot of the parish church of St Peter and Paul, which historically stood at the north-western corner of the site. The gently hilly vineyard is oriented to the south towards the Main and lies at an elevation of around 110 metres.
Soils and mesoclimate
The soils range from sandy to heavy loam, loess loam and clay marl. They are locally calcareous, vary over short distances in depth and texture, and are generally characterised by a high water-retention capacity. The Hochheim town wall protects the site from northerly winds and contributes to a sheltered mesoclimate with a low risk of frost. The south-facing orientation ensures high levels of sunshine.
Grape variety and wine style
Riesling is the documented main grape variety and the only variety grown for the classified area. Domdechaney has been classified as VDP.ERSTE LAGE since the 2016 vintage. The wines are described as full-bodied with pronounced mineral acidity and need time to fully develop their aromatic profile. The total area is around 10.5 hectares; 7.71 hectares are given for the classified area.
History
In the past, the site belonged to the Mainz Cathedral Chapter. The Dean of the Mainz Cathedral maintained a summer residence next to the church and gave the vineyard its name. For hot summers in the 18th century, irrigation with water brought in from the Main is reported; it is explicitly documented for the year 1775.
