Location and classification
Deutschherrenköpfchen is a registered single vineyard in the wine-growing region Mosel, Bernkastel area and grand cru Römerlay. The site is assigned to Trier and the district of Trier-Olewig; in the official vineyard register it is listed under the cadastral areas of Trier-Olewig and Trier. The vineyard number is 411226.
Soil and cultivation
The vineyard site is documented as a steep slope and is described by a producer as having extreme gradient and a very stony landscape. A documented experimental plot has weathered slate soil. For the vineyard areas there, organic fertiliser, winter cover crops, compost, low yields and selective hand-harvesting are described.
Vines and wines
Riesling is recorded for Deutschherrenköpfchen. Documented wines from the site include dry, off-dry and Auslese wines. A 2020 Köpfchen Riesling was vinified dry and described as Grosses Gewächs; it had 8.0 g/l acidity and 8.3 g/l residual sugar. For this Riesling, ageing in wooden casks is also documented.
Historic building
A two-storey vineyard hut in the Trier Deutschherrenköpfchen has, according to the documentation, stood there for more than 200 years.
