Location and extent
The Deutschherrenberg is located in Trier-Olewig within the Mosel region. The vineyard site covers about 15 hectares and extends from 150 to 250 metres in altitude. As an official single-vineyard site, it belongs to Trier and carries the vineyard register number 41 12 25.
Relief and soils
The site includes steep and gentler slope areas with exposures from south-east via south to west-south-west. A documented plot is oriented to the south, lies at 209 to 246 metres above sea level and has a slope of 8 to 24 per cent. The fresh, shallow to moderately deep soils were formed from weathered slate; documented as well are Devonian clay slate and a stony, base-poor Rigosol-brown earth.
Climate and cultivation
The south-exposed plot is associated with high levels of sunshine. For the steep vineyards of Trier, a mild local climate and a long growing season are described. The Gehlen winery cultivates about 0.5 hectares in the Trier Deutschherrenberg. Weingut Terges counts the site among its Trier vineyards and carries out harvesting and selection exclusively by hand.
Name and wines
The name refers to the former property of the Teutonic Order, which had a settlement in Trier from 1310. Rieslings are documented as wines designated by site, including dry and fine off-dry Kabinett, dry and fine off-dry Spätlese, Auslese, Beerenauslese and Eiswein. The Deutschherrenberg belongs to the Großlage Trierer Römerlay.
