Location and classification
The Dachsberg is referred to as the Winkeler Dachsberg and lies near Winkel in Oestrich-Winkel in the wine-growing region Rheingau. The site faces south-west and is around 130 to 150 metres above sea level.
Area and soils
For the Winkeler Dachsberg, the VDP records a classified area of 86.00 hectares and Riesling as the classified grape variety. Red slate and quartzite are given as the geological materials. The soils consist predominantly of deep loess and partly of stony loess clay.
Classification and wine style
The Winkeler Dachsberg has been classified by the VDP as VDP.ERSTE LAGE®. This VDP classification is a private classification and does not correspond to the statutory German vineyard classification. Wines from the site are associated with distinctive, lively acidity and a balanced fruit character. For an Allendorf Winkeler Dachsberg Riesling Kabinett, natural sweetness, clear acidity and a fruit-focused character are documented.
Name reference and cultivation
The name refers to badgers, which dig their burrows in the loose loess soils. In a state-funded viticultural project, damage from wild animals is documented as a point of consideration for plant protection in the higher-lying site. The proximity to wooded areas also provides shady habitats for insects. For the above-mentioned Riesling Kabinett, whole-bunch pressing and ageing in stainless-steel tanks are described.
