Location and classification
Dachgewann is a registered single vineyard site in the cadastral district of Zornheim in Rheinhessen. It belongs to the Nierstein area and to the larger site Gutes Domtal. In the 2024 directory of vineyard sites, it is listed under number 720427.
Topography and soils
The vineyard site lies at around 180 to 238 metres above sea level and is oriented towards the south-east. An elevated ridge divides the area; the ground slopes down on both sides, creating an effect reminiscent of a saddle roof.
The soil consists of deep, calcareous marl, or Pelosol with clayey deposits from the Tertiary sea. It is rich in clay capable of springing (holding water), nutrient-rich and strongly calcareous. Usable water retention is limited; permeability and aeration are restricted; heat retention is medium and rooting is difficult.
Wine style
The local terroir description links Dachgewann with full-bodied, dense and rich wines. It points to moderate acidity, a creamy texture and ripe fruit notes of mango, apricot and honeydew melon. The expression is described as less mineral, fruit-forward and long-lasting.
Name and history
The name Dachgewann has been handed down as a shortened form of Tagwerksgewann and originally referred to an area that a person could work on in a single day. For the area, the names Im Metzler, Am Kreuz, An der Ruh and Am Selzerberg are also documented in the 19th century and in the first half of the 20th century. After the merger of earlier vineyard names in the early 1970s, the present five named Zornheim vineyard sites were established.
