Clos de la Barre

Site and classification

Clos de la Barre is a walled monopole vineyard belonging to Domaine des Comtes Lafon in Meursault in Burgundy. It lies behind the family residence of the estate, is oriented to the east, and has a gradient of 0 to 2 per cent. With 2.12 hectares, Clos de la Barre is classified as a Meursault monopole at village level and not as a Premier Cru site.

Vines and cultivation

The vineyard is planted with Chardonnay. The documented planting years are 1950, 1975, 1999 and 2004. The soil consists of shallow loam over a hard limestone subsoil. Domaine des Comtes Lafon cultivates Clos de la Barre using certified organic and biodynamic methods. For new plantings, mass selection and clone selection are combined; at least five types are documented. The pruning is carried out predominantly according to Guyot, partly according to Cordon Royat, on the documented rootstock 161-49.

Wine and ageing

The bottling Clos de la Barre Magnum by Comtes Lafon is a dry white wine made from Chardonnay. Whole-bunch pressing and fermentation with natural yeasts in wooden barrels are documented for the vinification. After the biological deacidification, the wine is racked. The ageing period is 18 to 20 months; afterwards the blend is made in tank, with slight fining if needed.
