Location and Classification
The Centgericht is a single vineyard in Heppenheim (Bergstraße) within the wine-growing region Hessische Bergstraße. The VDP classifies the site as VDP.ERSTE LAGE® with a designated area of 7.10 hectares.
Topography and Soils
The south-west-facing hillside is among the sunny sites of the Bergstraße. The lower slope is described as deep and warm. Deep loess marl soils are found there, while the upper third is covered by a layer of loess.
Cultivation and History
The Centgericht is a monopoly of Kloster Eberbach and is farmed by Kloster Eberbach. Locally, the site is also known as the vine mother garden, as in the 20th century American rootstock vines were cultivated there to protect against phylloxera. The name Centgericht refers to a historical court that once stood at this location. From 1927 to 1929, a winegrowing school in Oppenheim carried out experimental plantings here to investigate phylloxera-resistant rootstocks.
Grape Varieties and Wines
As classified grape varieties, the VDP lists Riesling, Weißburgunder and Grauburgunder. Kloster Eberbach has plantings of Grauburgunder and Weißburgunder; the parcel Im Landberg within the Centgericht is planted with Grauburgunder. Documented are Riesling ice wine as well as dry site wines from Grauburgunder and Weißburgunder.
