Location and designation
Carlsfelsen is a named vineyard site in Palzem on the southern Mosel, also known as Upper Mosel. The site belonging to the Carlsfelsen winery is referred to as “Palzemer Carlsfelsen”.
Soil and grape varieties
The vineyard site is characterised by shell limestone and fossil marine deposits from the Paris Basin. For the Palzemer Carlsfelsen, a high proportion of marl is also described. On the shell limestone of the site, Sauvignon Blanc is grown.
Cultivation and wine style
Most work in the vineyard is carried out by hand. The vines are cultivated without aids against pests or weeds. The wines from the marl-rich soils are described as creamy, well-balanced in acidity and restrained in their character of the soil. Hand-harvested grapes are processed gently and fermented at controlled temperatures in wooden and stainless-steel vessels.
