Location and classification
Burgweg is a single vineyard site in the cadastral vineyard of Weinsheim of the city of Worms. It belongs to the Wonnegau and the Großlage Liebfrauenmorgen in Rheinhessen.
Altitude and soils
The vineyards are situated at around 95 to 110 metres above sea level and are oriented from the north-east to east. Documented are loess over pararendzina as well as gravel, sand and loam soils of the Rigosol type. The loess soils are calcareous, deep, loamy and able to store water. Gravel, sand and loam are considered stony and well-drained, but in dry years are more susceptible to drought stress.
Area and wine style
The official site profile lists a vineyard area of 41 hectares. The 2024 vineyard directory lists Burgweg as a single vineyard site under number 730504, with 45.8 hectares planted. The loess and pararendzina sections are linked to fresh, medium-bodied white wines, while the gravel, sand and loam soils show rather structured characteristics oriented towards red wine.
Historical references
In 1390, the site was documented under the name an dem Borgwege; the name denotes a path leading to a castle. Finds from Roman times were also recorded in the area of Burgweg, and a Roman road ran through the area of Weinsheim.
