Location and Classification
Burgweg is an officially recorded single vineyard within the Großlage Sankt Alban in the Nierstein sub-region of the wine-growing region Rheinhessen. The vineyard site is recorded in the cadastral areas of Bodenheim and Mainz-Laubenheim. The 2024 vineyard directory lists 40.1 hectares in Bodenheim and 1.0 hectares in Mainz-Laubenheim.
Topography and Soils
Burgweg lies north of Bodenheim at an elevation of about 100 metres. The documented VDP.GROSSE LAGE section is oriented to the east as far as the south-east and has a slope of approximately 20 percent; for the entire vineyard site, 10 to 25 percent are given. The soils consist of ice-age loess as well as sandy, clayey loam and are described regionally as loess-pararendzina.
Climate and Grape Varieties
In the flatter sections of the slope, sheltered hollows form that promote a warm microclimate. The opening to the east as far as the south-east, as well as protection from cold north and east winds by the Taunus and Odenwald, are described as climatic features of the site. Pinot Noir (Spätburgunder) is the most important documented grape variety; for the broader vineyard site, Riesling, Silvaner and Scheurebe are also recorded.
Classification and History
The VDP.GROSSE LAGE BURGWEG comprises 5.25 hectares in the upper core area of the larger single vineyard. Pinot Noir (Spätburgunder) is designated as the classified grape variety. The first documented mention dates from 1364, when the site was referred to as “Uf dem Burgwege”. The spelling is probably a transfer of “Bergwege”.
