Location and Classification
Burgmauer is a single-vineyard site in Schweich in the wine-growing region Mosel. The legally recognised wine-growing site belongs to the Großlage Probstberg. It lies on the side of Schweich that is turned away from the Mosel and extends to the north and east around the town.
Climate and Soils
The site is described as cooler than the neighbouring Schweicher Annaberg. Its average temperature is slightly lower, and in addition there is often wind that is clearly perceptible. The terrain is comparatively flat, although it has steep sections in places.
The soil is described as loess-clay with rock content. In the communal classification, Burgmauer is also linked together with the Herrenberg with red slate soils.
Grape Variety and Wine Style
Riesling is documented for the Schweicher Burgmauer. A wine produced from it is a delicately off-dry Riesling Kabinett as a Prädikatswein from the Mosel. The site is associated with Riesling in the Kabinett style.
Tradition and Winemaking
For Burgmauer, a long-standing tradition of viticulture with references in historical documents is evidenced. In a documented Burgmauer Riesling, the grapes were selectively hand-harvested, pressed as whole berries, and fermented with natural yeasts from the vineyard and cellar in a stainless-steel tank.
